OVERVIEW.

Arashi Hillside Retreat is a contemporary private getaway shaped by openness, calm, and a gentle sense of progression. Designed for a young family seeking light, fresh air, and a more connected daily rhythm, the retreat blends clean modern lines with warm, relaxed living. Set on a sloping hillside site, it explores how architecture can sit naturally with the landscape while keeping the boundary between inside and outside soft and fluid.

The design is organized around a clear guiding move: a linear terrace spine that aligns the main living areas along the view. Wide openings, full-height glazing, and sliding panels stretch the interior toward the outdoors, pulling daylight deep into the plan and supporting natural cross ventilation. A balanced composition of stone, timber, and glass creates a grounded atmosphere minimal in form, yet rich in comfort.
Materials are kept honest and tactile. Natural wood brings warmth, stone and concrete provide stability, and transparent glass maintains openness without losing clarity. Subtle contrasts in texture, paired with integrated built-in elements, add depth while preserving the quiet character of the spaces. From orientation to interior detailing, each choice is made to support a healthier, more effortless living environment.

Design Philosophy.

At the heart of Arashi Hillside Retreat is the belief that simplicity can heighten everyday experience. The elongated layout isn’t only aesthetic it guides movement, frames the landscape, and allows light to shift across the home throughout the day. By reducing unnecessary partitions, the design encourages seamless connections between rooms and outdoor terraces, expanding both the visual field and the feeling of spaciousness. Every material and detail is selected for durability and flexibility, so the retreat remains timeless as needs change over time.

Challenges.

Designing for a hillside setting introduced its own challenges. Balancing privacy while keeping views open required careful placement of windows, screens, and outdoor transitions. The sloped terrain demanded precise level changes and structural planning to keep circulation natural and comfortable. Finally, maintaining consistent indoor comfort—especially with varying wind and temperature conditions required thoughtful opening placement, shading strategies, and insulation choices, all while keeping the architecture clean and restrained.

Outcome.

Today, Arashi Hillside Retreat stands as a quiet refuge a home that breathes with the site, adapts to its environment, and reflects a considered, human-centered approach to living in nature.
